North Argyll Carers Centre Limited

Joined SCVO as a Member on 13 May

North Argyll Carers Centre is a small, local charity providing person centred emotional and practical support to unpaid carers across the Oban, Lorn and Isles area. We have 18 staff and 9 volunteers supporting approximately 800 adult carers and 140 young carers over the age of 5. We are governed by our board of Trustees. Currently we have four members on the board with the Secretary’s role vacant, though we are looking to recruit to that and also to increase the membership in order to ensure that we have as broad a range of skills as possible reflected in the make-up. The Board meets every other month with the Manager. The operational team is comprised of nine full time, five part time and four sessional workers. The Manager oversees the strategic running of the organisation and is supported by the Assistant Manager (Operations), the Administration, Finance and Volunteer Coordinator, and the Young Carer Service Coordinator. We have five Adult Carer Support Workers on the Mainland, three of whom cover the Oban area and provide the drop-in service for visitors to the centre, and two who provide an outreach service covering the rest of rural Lorn and the smaller islands, providing home visits to ensure that those in the most remote areas , who cannot come to Oban, receive parity of service. In addition, we have Carer Support Workers based on the larger Islands, covering Coll, Tiree, Mull and Iona. They are well placed within their communities to understand the specific challenges of island life and to deliver direct support, peer groups and activities. Our Training and Development Coordinator delivers a wide range of activities for adult carers both on the mainland and on the islands. Our Young Carer Support Team is comprised of two established posts and four sessional staff and delivers afterschool clubs, lunchtime school drop-in sessions, 1:1 emotional support and mentoring, activities, day trips and residentials. We are commissioned by Argyll and Bute HSCP to deliver the requirements of the Carers (Scotland) Act, including producing Adult Carer Support Plans and Young Carer Statements, providing information on carers rights and entitlements and supporting carers with emergency and future planning. In addition to this statutory funding we also apply for non-statutory funding to support our programme of early intervention and prevention work. This includes assistance for carers to access short breaks, free counselling and relaxation therapies, and a broad range of training, events, activities, day trips, residentials and peer support groups. It is important to us to ensure that carers feel heard and valued. We provide informal advocacy for carers and strive to ensure that their voices are represented and recognised at both local and national levels.
